Thyroids
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland in the front portion of the neck. The primary function of the gland is to secrete two hormones- Triiodothyronine (T3) and Thyroxine (T4). These hormones play a very important role in the body’s metabolism. Production of these hormones needs iodine from the diet. Depending on whether the thyroid gland is underactive or overactive, some disorders are seen.
Common thyroid diseases include:
- Hypothyroidism(underactive): Symptoms may include weight gain, constipation, dry skin, muscle or joint pain, cold sensitivity, and fatigue.
- Hyperthyroidism(overactive): Symptoms include fast heartbeat, nervousness, increased bowel movements, sweating, intolerance for heat, and unintentional weight loss.
- Goitre: It is an enlarged thyroid gland due to various factors like hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, thyroid cancer, or lack of iodine in the diet.
- Grave’s disease: It is an autoimmune disease of the thyroid gland leading to hyperthyroidism.
- Hashimoto’s disease: It is an autoimmune illness that causes inflammation of the thyroid gland leading to hypothyroidism
- Thyroid nodules: Presence of abnormal lumps or nodules on the glands causing hyperthyroidism.
- Thyroid cancer: Presence of malignant lump in the thyroid glands.
Diagnosis of thyroid disorder
Routine blood tests are done to know if you have a thyroid disorder.
TSH test: The pituitary gland in the brain produces TSH( Thyroid stimulating hormone) which tells the thyroid gland the amount of hormone to be produced. A high TSH level can indicate hypothyroidism. Your thyroid isn’t making enough hormones, so the pituitary gland keeps releasing TSH to stimulate hormone production. Similarly, low TSH levels can signal hyperthyroidism.
T4 and T4 test : In certain cases, like pregnancy or medication, T4 levels may be higher or lower. But if a pre-existing condition isn’t the reason, high T3 or T4 may indicate hyperthyroidism and lower values, hypothyroidism.
Thyroid antibody test : The level of antibodies in the blood can help pinpoint if your thyroid disorder is due to an autoimmune condition like Hashimoto’s disease or Graves’ disease.
Thyroid treatment
There are various treatment options for thyroid disorders. For thyroid disorders due to over- or under-production of thyroid hormones, treatment includes restoring the hormone levels to their proper balance. The disturbance of hormones is not a serious health condition and can be easily managed with proper diet, natural herbs, and lifestyle modification.
Kayacare can help you control your thyroid problem without synthetic hormone tablets or any drugs. Our team of experts helps you manage thyroid hormone naturally with a holistic approach.
Pregnancy Diets

A healthy pregnancy diet should be a balanced diet containing carbohydrates, proteins, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals with adequate fiber and water. Pregnancy increases the nutrient demands on the body. A woman can choose her diet to meet these demands and support fetal development.
During pregnancy, there is a higher demand for iron, calcium, vitamin A, and folic acid specifically for fetal development. To meet these demands a diet rich in these nutrients is preferred. Many doctors prefer a prenatal supplement that can help provide the necessary nutrients for pregnancy, breastfeeding, and postnatal recovery.
Many times due to nausea especially during the first trimester, women are not able to eat properly. In that case, smaller and more frequent meals are helpful rather than having 3 big meals in a day.
During pregnancy, there is an increased risk of bacterial food poisoning. So, all kinds of raw and potentially contaminated foods must be avoided like raw, undercooked, or contaminated seafood, undercooked meat, poultry and eggs, unpasteurized foods like milk, mold-ripened cheese like blue cheese, unwashed fruits and vegetables, and street food where good hygiene is not followed. Alcoholic beverages must be avoided as these are linked to miscarriage and stillbirth. Caffeinated drinks/ products must be limited. Always prefer fresh and wholesome foods to processed, refined, and chemically preserved foods, irrespective of the advertising claims.

Weight Gain
Weight gain simply means an increase in body weight. This can be due to an increase in muscle mass, fluid retention, or fat deposits. Weight gain can be desirable and undesirable depending upon the situation. For an underweight person, gaining a few kgs is desirable. Weight gain can be considered healthy in growing kids and pregnant women. But unintentional and undesirable weight gain can be alarming.
Causes of weight gain
- Medication
- Pregnancy
- Sleep disturbance
- Menstruation
- Thyroid problem
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome
- Heart problems
- Stress and anxiety
- Kidney problems
Unintentional Gaining weight can have many causes. Metabolism slows down with aging. This can cause weight gain if you eat too much, eat the wrong foods, or are not sufficiently active. Some medications can also cause unintentional weight gain. Some people just have it in their genes that they put on weight more easily than others. Heavily processed foods loaded with sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats are one of the major factors contributing to undesirable weight gain these days. Menopause and perimenopause, PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), and insomnia can also contribute to weight gain in people. Adopting a healthy diet and lifestyle can help counter many causes of weight gain and prevent any serious problems in the future.
Apart from the causes mentioned above, sometimes the underlying cause of weight gain can be more serious. Rapid weight gain or swelling in particular areas of the body can be due to fluid retention and can be an indication of heart failure. Sudden weight gain or swelling in the body could also be a symptom of kidney disease. Swelling due to kidney disease usually affects the legs, ankles, and feet. Rapid gain with a large abdomen can indicate liver cirrhosis. Hypothyroidism can also lead to rapid weight gain. Sudden and unexplained weight gain can be due to Ovarian cancer in women.
Weight gain can happen due to several reasons. But sudden weight gain can be an indicator of underlying health issues and should not be ignored. In some cases, it can become life-threatening too. If you experience rapid, unexplained weight gain, do not ignore and consult your healthcare provider immediately.

Childhood Obesity Program
Childhood obesity is an increasingly serious global public health challenge. It’s a condition where excess body fat can negatively affect a child’s physical, mental and emotional health and well-being. Childhood obesity usually leads to many other serious adult health problems like type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.
All kids having extra kilos are not obese or overweight. Some kids just have bigger body frames. Diagnosis of obesity is usually based on a parameter called Body mass index (BMI). A child’s doctor can use growth charts, BMI, and, if required some other tests to figure out if your child's weight could pose health problems.
Childhood obesity may lead to poor self-esteem and even depression in children as kids may experience bullying or teasing in schools and peer groups. The major underlying cause of childhood obesity is a poor lifestyle -Too little activity and too many calories from foods and drinks. Supermarkets are flooded with varieties of junk food, soda drinks, candies, and chocolates. Advertisements are attracting kids to these foods and playing with their health. Sometimes, genetics are also responsible for childhood obesity. Obese children usually have one or more obese or overweight parents.
What are the symptoms of childhood obesity?
A child with too much fat around is obese. Some of the symptoms of child obesity are –
- Overeating
- Potbelly
- Shortness of breath
It is important to have a good childhood obesity program in place to control this global pandemic. Childhood obesity can only be reduced by improving the eating and exercise habits of the entire family. It needs a multidisciplinary approach. Engaging kids in outdoor activities, reducing screen time, limiting sugar and processed food in their diet, encouraging natural fresh foods, and exercising daily are the most important steps in this direction.
To bring a change, the entire family and even schools, day-care centers, and nurseries must adopt a comprehensive healthy lifestyle program, not just force the poor kid to change. Advertisements promoting unhealthy foods should be banned. Preventing childhood obesity can help protect children's health now and in the future.
Importance of diet
It is essential to have a proper diet plan to lower the BMI. Kayacare, with its highly qualified team and years of experience has successfully treated childhood obesity. A thorough consultation with the parents helps us know the root cause and this makes us choose the best line of treatment.

Belly Fat Program
Belly fat refers to the fat around the abdomen region. Belly fat is of 2 types- visceral and subcutaneous. Visceral fat surrounds a person’s organs whereas subcutaneous fat sits under the skin. Visceral fat can lead to more health problems than subcutaneous fat. Excess belly fat can increase the risk of many other chronic health problems like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, and even cancer.
People with belly fat are not necessarily obese. Some people are not obese in Body mass index (BMI) but still have concerning belly fat. These people are at risk, despite meeting BMI criteria.
Causes of belly fat/ abdominal fat
There are many causes of belly fat.
- Lack of movement and sedentary lifestyle.
- Unhealthy diet. Eating processed food or foods high in fats and sugars.
- Excessive alcohol consumption also causes belly fat.
- Smoking may not be a direct cause but still a risk factor
- Lack of sleep. Improper sleep has been linked to obesity. Lack of sleep promotes irresponsible eating.
- Stress. People often reach out for food when stressed, contributing to belly fat.
- Genetics. It is believed that genetics also play a part in a person’s metabolism and tendency to put on weight in certain areas of the body
When it is a concern?
If the waist circumference of women is more than 35 inches and more than 40 inches in men, it is an alarm. It calls for your attention to watch your waistline.
